The profession produces plate armour and decent weapons. It's also true that plate armour is the most popular as the most equipment reliant classes of Warrior and Paladin both rely on it.

Back when Warcraft was initially released, Blacksmithing - often coupled with mining was the a very popular combination for many players. Paladins and Warriors would look to gain some level of self reliance by picking these two as their primary professions. Will this be the case with level 525 Illustrious

However, as more instances were added to the end game, it became apparent that the armour you could craft with your profession was inferior to the end game instance drops, and Blacksmithing slowly lost it's popularity.

It was thought that the instances would contain bind-on-pick-up recipes for Blacksmith's to allow them to keep up with the loot. While there were some - it soon became apparent that there was no-where near the choice or quantity to allow the professions to be really viable end-game.

However, as each new expansion pack is introduced, the new profession levels mean that there is a temporary surge in interest again for the items that Blacksmiths craft - both to level up - and for the first tier instances that are added after the expansion. This lasts perhaps six weeks, possibly on some servers up to twelve before fading again.

Blizzard have been questioned about this. After all crafting professions like Alchemy and Enchanting retain usefulness throughout the whole life of an expansion. There has been little in the way of improvement though.

In short, blacksmithing is a strange profession. Having value at the high end for only 20% of each expansion's life cycle, but retaining some usefulness to those still in the levelling process throughout the game.

I suggest, if you have a 450 Blacksmith. We got tot this building, which had this makeshift stage set up. They had a bunch of folding chairs. For a minute I thought it was going to be some holy roller convention, or that I was going to get kidnapped into some cult or something. After that fear passed, I settled back and accepted my fate.

Then this really tall guy came out on this stage. For some reason I thought I was on the only one there, until I heard all these people clapping. It turns out I was at some kind of magic show, or a mentalist show. This guy started doing some pretty crafty illusions, but nothing that I hadn't seen on TV.

After that, the hallucinations began. Or whatever you want to call them. He started speaking to people, but he wasn't talking. It was like he was mentally projecting himself into peoples minds. I looked around and everybody had these really goofy looks on their faces, like they were enjoying it, but a little worried at the same time.

Then he did something really strange. He pulled people on stage, and had them start talking. He then would pick another person from the audience, and ask them a random question. Then he would ask the person on stage to answer the question. And before the person could answer, this magician would answer the question for them, exactly as they would have answered it.

The only reason I remember any of this is I had my cell phone recording the whole thing. But when I came home, it turns out all the language spoken that day was in the ancient language of Sumerian, which I've never studied.
